Alton (Red) Barcomb, our beloved husband and father, passed away January 3, 2018 at the UVM Health Network, CVPH in Plattsburgh, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 78. Our hearts may be breaking, but we are also filled with joy and wonderful memories, having had such a wonderful man in our lives. God received a very special person when he welcomed Alton into heaven. Family was of the utmost importance in Alton's life and he often referred to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as his pride and joy. Along with his loving wife, Beverly, he raised seven children. He was a testament to the importance of a strong work ethic and the value of a sense of humor. Alton was always there to support his family, and never missed one of his children's numerous softball games or band concerts. He was a friend to all, and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Alton had a natural ability to fix anything, which came in handy with such a large family. He was always willing to help others and loved camping, woodworking, and old cars. In the past few years, he especially enjoyed bringing his Model A Ford to area car shows. Alton loved the North Country, where he remained his entire life. He attended Altona Central School and worked hard to support his family for 40 years at Georgia Pacific. Prior to moving to Plattsburgh five years ago, he resided in Sciota for most of his childhood and adult life. Alton's faith was important to him. He was presently a communicant of Saint Peter's Church. Prior to moving to Plattsburgh, he attended Saint Louis of France Church in Sciota. He was also a Third Degree Knight with the Msgr. A. M. Gilbert Council #6136 Mooers Knights of Columbus. In short, Alton was one of the great ones. He has shown us how to live our lives with integrity, and how to die with grace. He will be deeply missed by his wife and the love of his life, the former Beverly Rabideau, whom he married on February 18, 1958 at Saint Mary's Church in Champlain, NY. His living legacy continues with his seven children: Tammy (Gary) Nephew of Plattsburgh; Wendy (Robert) Mesick of Chazy; Lisa (Paul) Hammelman of Belmar, New Jersey; Julie (Michael) Filion of Churubusco; Connie (Andrew) Poupore of Mooers Forks; Cindy (Keith) Porter of Morrisonville; and Jeremy (Jessica) Barcomb of Greenwich, NY; his 21 grandchildren: Gary (Sara) Nephew; Farrah (Adam) Whitney; Jodie Nephew; Jonathan, Christopher, and Alexandra Mesick; Jennifer and Rachel Hammelman; Dr. Tera (James) Potts; Krista (Joshua) Williams; James, Shayna, and Jace Filion; Curtis Poupore; Danielle (Scott) Sewell; Kadie, Ami, and Zoe Porter; and Jacob, Leah, and Rebekah Barcomb; and 11 great-grandchildren: Nola, Gavin, Autumn, Josie, James, Lucca, Chloee, Logan, Bryson, Brent, and Lexi. He will also be dearly missed by his siblings: Albert (Deanie) Barcomb, Barbara (John) Gibson, and Francis (Flo) Barcomb; sister-in-law Mary Barcomb, sister-in-law Martha Hicks, sister- and brother-in-law Lenore and William Guerin, sister- and brother-in-law Betty and Brian Hinton, sister- and brother-in-law Theresa and James Fields, and brother- and sister-in-law Dennis Rabideau and Debby Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews. Alton was predeceased by his parents, Francis Barcomb and Delia (Duprey) Barcomb Trombley, his brothers Earl and Adrian Barcomb, twin granddaughters Caroline and Christine (died in infancy), sister-in-law Roberta Barcomb, and brother-in-law Robert Hicks.
