Plattsburgh Beatrice Matzkin, 88, of Lake Forest, Plattsburgh, passed away on Monday May 28, 2018 at her home. She was born in New York City on April 21, 1930 the daughter of Louis and Sophie (Gurrowitz) Greenstein. After matriculating at age 16, Beatrice graduated from Hunter College and went on to earn a masters degree in education from Queens College. She continued to advance her graduate education, and by the time she retired in 1992, she completed all of the necessary course work for a PhD. Most of her career was spent teaching grades one through four in Ossining Central School District in Ossining, NY. Beatrice married Myron Matzkin on December 21, 1952 in New York City. They met while both were members of a New York fencing club. She had previously competed on the intercollegiate level for the Hunter College fencing team. Their love for each other was enhanced by their mutual love of sports. Beyond Fencing, Beatrice competed avidly in motor sports, tennis, skiing, and long-distance running. She ran-and finished”three New York City Marathons. In their retirement years, Bea and Mike chose to spend their vacations participating in bike tours that took them to a number of destinations including Italy, Ireland, Rhode Island and Hawaii, where they cycled around the crater of an active volcano. They also enjoyed travel to a variety of locales in Japan, Europe and the Carribean. Her love of travel was one of the many gifts she bequest to her children and grandchildren. Beatrice is survived by her husband of 65 years Myron "Mike" Matzkin, as well as their two children, Sarah Brown and her husband Rodney of Peru, and Johnathon Matzkin of New York City. She adored her two granddaughters; Rebecca Brown of Washington D.C. and Sonja Brown of Peru. It was to be closer to their granddaughters the led Bea and Mike to relocate from Westchester County to the North Country. Several nieces and nephews also survive her. She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Seymour Greenstein, Zenida Breitstein, Anita Orlanski, and Laura Kessler. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the Temple Beth Israel in Plattsburgh, NY. Burial will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery in Plattsburgh. The family will be sitting Shiva at 16 Hillside Drive, Peru, NY on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Susan G. Komen or the Foundation of CVPH.
