Plattsburgh Claire F. Deloria, 82, of Baldwinsville NY, passed away on Sunday January 17, 2016 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility in Plattsburgh. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 7, 1933 the daughter of Francis and Veronica (Neverett) Deloria. Claire graduated from St. John's Academy in Plattsburgh. She then attended and graduated from State University of New York at Albany with Bachelor's and Master's degrees. She then pursued a Certificate of Advanced Study at SUNY Oswego and later did Doctoral work at Syracuse University. Her field of study was Education. Claire taught Social Studies at Liverpool High School for many years to juniors and seniors. She not only taught the basic courses, she introduced many of them to other electives such as African Studies and Anthropology and widened their world. She loved to travel and spent a summer touring Europe, taking pictures and gathering items to share with her students in the Fall. Later she did the same on a trip to Moscow, Kiev and Leningrad. Twice she went to Africa focusing on Egypt and the Serengeti. Claire was also the Assistant Supervisor for the Social Studies Department and did Staff Development for the Liverpool School District. During the summers, Claire went to Colonial Williamsburg and was involved in writing the curriculum for the K-12 focused on Government and the Revolutionary Period. She was also a peer facilitator for their Peer Institutes. Claire held many offices in the New York State and local Social Studies Councils and was a yearly participant and presenter at Social Studies conferences throughout the state and nation. Claire was awarded the Bertha E. Brimmer Medal, from the State University of New York at Albany, which "'celebrates alumni for excellence in teaching K-12 and for dedication to their profession." In 1984, the University of the State of New York Education Department "proclaimed her New York State Teacher of the Year". She was predeceased by her parents. Claire is survived by her brother William (Shirley) of Plattsburgh and her companion and close friend Barbara J. Aitken of Baldwinsville. She is also survived by two nephews, James (Kate) of Gansevoort, NY and Michael (Kristen) of Plattsburgh. Calling hours will be held from 3-5pm on Wednesday January 20th at Brown's Funeral Home, A memorial service and Mass will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Plattsburgh at 10:00am, Thursday, January 21st, 2016. Burial will follow at the Holy Name Cemetary, Au Sable Forks, NY at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the S.F. Vilas Home, 61 Beekman Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901 or the Baldwinsville Public Library in Baldwinsville, NY.
