D Shirley Light Rn

Plattsburgh D. Shirley Light, RN, 88, of Underwood Avenue and formerly of Dannemora, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Clinton County Nursing Home with her family by her side following a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in Plattsburgh on May 24, 1921, daughter of Walter and Mabel (Elkins) Calkins. Shirley was a graduate of Plattsburgh High School in 1939 and graduated from the Champlain Valley School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She worked at Queens Hospital in New York City. After her marriage to her husband Walter E. Light in Brownsville, Texas on December 2, 1944, Shirley worked at Champlain Valley Hospital and Physicians Hospital in Pediatrics, retiring in 1974 as pediatric charge nurse. Shirley was a member of the Champlain Valley Nurses Alumni and St. Peter's Church. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She and Walter wintered in Florida from 1981 to 1998. Shirley is survived by her husband of 65 years, Walter E. Light of Plattsburgh, their children; Linda Williams and her husband Doug of Latham, New York, Walter Peter Light and his wife Patricia of Dannemora, Patricia "Pat" Lucia and her husband Rick of Plattsburgh, Mary Ellen "Mel" Light and her life long companion Mary C. Mahan of Plattsburgh, Michele Light and John Hinson of Dannemora, Michael Light and his wife Loraine of Lisbon, New York, 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was pre-deceased by her parents Walter and Mabel Calkins, a brother Bob Calkins and his wife Theresa and her adoptive family, Irene Beardsley, Abbie Beardsley, Hilda Beardsley and Betty Mace. Calling hours will be Friday, September 04, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, New York. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 5, 2009, at 12:00 noon at the Brown Funeral Home, Chapel. Entombment will follow in Whispering Maples Mausoleum in Plattsburgh.
