David J Rivers

David J. Rivers. 89, died, surrounded by family and friends, in the Punta Gorda Hospital on Sunday, October 29, 2017. David, a lifelong resident of Plattsburgh, NY, has been a snowbird for the last many years spending the winters in St. Augustine and Punta Gorda, Florida and summers in Plattsburgh and West Chazy. David hailed from Saint John's Catholic School class of 1946 and the athletic accomplishments of the Saint John's Irish were always a source of pride. Immediately after graduation he felt a call to serve his country and joined the Marines serving in Guam and China. Returning to the Plattsburgh area David made his career working for the New York Telephone Company. Loving golf, (most especially his hole in one), the New York Yankees, and anything Irish were his lifelong passions. David is predeceased by his parents David J. Rivers and Marion (Hengel) Rivers; a sister Nancy who died in childhood, and his loving wife of 39 years (Noreen Haley 1990,) a granddaughter Christy, and recently deceased by his brother-in-law and dear friend, Jack W. Haley. David is survived by; his brother Franklyn Rivers of Port Charlotte, Florida, his devoted partner for the last 20 years, Valida Cote of West Chazy and Punta Gorda. He is also survived by his daughters and their husbands: Nancy (Pat) McCormick, Kit (Chris) Devlin, Tricia (Kent) Olsen and Molly (Chris) Murnane. David is blessed with 7 grandchildren: Tim McCormick and his partner Leigh Carter, Christopher and his wife Devon, David John Devlin, Shannon and Kurtis Olsen and Haley K. Murnane. He's also survived by his brother-in-law R. Michael Haley and his wife Vicki, and his beloved Haley family. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at St. John's Church. Interment to follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center.
