Elizabeth (Betty) Fitzpatrick Hughes passed away at Schuyler Ridge Healthcare Center on Monday June 25, 2018 at the age of 91. She was born in Plattsburgh, NY on January 18th, 1927, the daughter of Patrick F. and Anna (Downs) Fitzpatrick and was a life-long resident of Peru, NY. Betty graduated from Peru Central School and received a Bachelor and Master of Science from Plattsburgh State University College. A teacher for more than 30 years, she worked in Ausable, Keeseville, and Peru. She taught High School Home Economics and, after retiring, she substituted in many subjects, from English to Special Education to Gym! Betty was a supporter of the Friends of the Library in Peru, and, at St. Augustine's Church, she was a past President of the Altar Rosary Society and a Lector at Sunday Mass. She also served as the Secretary of the Northern Zone of Teachers, Secretary of the Peru Association of Teachers Public Relations and Entertainment Committees, and was a member of the NYS Teachers' Retirement System. Betty will be remembered as the embodiment of comfort and home. She loved her family and was always ready to celebrate by cheering them on and taking their pictures! She was a great homemaker and her house was always decorated for the season, a tradition her family has continued to this day. She was the epitome of thoughtfulness and an innocent comment could result in a special chocolate pie, a batch of cookies, or the lighting of a church candle for a special intention. She also taught her family the value of writing thank-you notes and the importance of setting the perfect table. Betty was an avid golfer and bridge player, enjoyed a good joke, and loved a glass of white wine while entertaining her family and friends. She traveled extensively from New York City, Florida, Hawaii, Seaside Park, to the Bahamas, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Scotland, and Spain; she saw the world through her own eyes and shared her experiences through stories and pictures. Betty married Stanley James Hughes on July 19th, 1950. Her husband predeceased her in 1997. They had three children: Marian Tomaso, Patricia (and Kurt) Neiswender, and Daniel (and Mary) Hughes. She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Christopher (and Jennifer) Tomaso, Mark (and Lacey) Neiswender, Laura (and Riley) Hill, Meghan (and Brian) Garvey, Caitlin Hughes, and Brendan Hughes. She is also survived by her five great-grandchildren: Lila Elizabeth, Charles Stanley, Aidan Quinn, Eliana Marie, and Hailee Madeleine and her much-loved nieces and nephews. Betty is also pre-deceased by her three half-brothers John, Robert, and Jeremiah Fitzpatrick. The family extends their thanks to the staff of the Schuyler Ridge Rehabilitation and Residential Healthcare in Clifton Park, NY for the care she received.
