Gillis Loy Green

Gillis Loy Green, 87, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026 at Pine Harbour. He was born May 22nd, 1939, the son of Edward George Green and Florence (LaVenture) Green.

"Loy" and his twin sister "Joy" were born in Plattsburgh and attended Plattsburgh High School. After high school, he moved to Denver, Colorado for a short time before enlisting and serving 4 years in the Navy on the USS Los Angeles.

He eventually returned to Plattsburgh and married Julie, an old childhood friend. He and Julie moved to Virginia, where he worked for General Electric and where their two children, Noel and Jacob were born. Then later, they relocated to Plattsburgh, where they raised their children, surrounded by family. After years working as a millwright at Imperial Paper Mill, Loy eventually was a civilian employee at Plattsburgh Air Force Base, where he was the head of housing maintenance. Upon closure of Plattsburgh AFB, Loy and Julie moved to Oklahoma, built a home on a mountaintop overlooking a lake, and he completed his working career as a foreman with the Army Corps of Engineers, working on the Arkansas River Project. Julie's untimely death soon returned Loy to the North Country. Years later, he and Penny married and spent the next 24 years together, making memories with their families. Following the draw of warm weather and year-round golf, Loy and Penny left their lake-side home on Point au Roche and relocated to Vero Beach, Florida for the past 4 years, returning to Plattsburgh only four months ago, in April of 2026, settling in at Pine Harbor Assisted Living.

Loy was a friend to anyone that met him. He was mild mannered, humble, and kind. You may never have heard him say a word about himself, but he was always a good listener. It is unlikely that anyone would say a disparaging word about him. He loved to golf and entertain, and was always ready to share a cocktail, but usually not until 5 PM. He laughed at everyone's jokes. He was a kind and patient father and a role model of honesty, loyalty, and hard work. He endured the loss of his wife and daughter with unparalleled dignity and strength. He cared deeply for his grandchildren and step-grandchildren, all of who's fondest childhood memories were made at Penny and Loy's lake house and on the boat. Loy will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Penny; children, Jacob Green and his wife Denise; stepchildren, Dewey Carter and his wife Jenn, Travis Carter; grandchildren, Madelyn, Annabelle, Emery, Lydia Green and Eli Foley; step grandchildren, Hailey, Chloe, Molly and Ryan; sister, Phyllis Joy Crawford.

He is predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Julie Green, daughter Noel Foley and sister Barbara Case.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh, New York. A prayer service will follow. Inurnment will be on Friday, July 31, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Angels Cemetery in Altona , New York.
