Harold J. Girard, 85, of State Route Three, Plattsburgh, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the CVPH Medical Center with his loving family by his side. He was born in Plattsburgh on February 3, 1934 the son of Harold J. and Lena (Durett) Girard.
Harold married Naomi Deso on February 27, 1954 at St. John’s Church in Plattsburgh. She predeceased him on March 5, 2007. He retired from the Press Republican in 1996 after thirty three years of service. Harold enjoyed bowling and served on the Plattsburgh Mens Bowling Association Board of Directors and served as secretary/treasurer of the Tuesday Night Men’s Handicap League. He also enjoyed playing bingo and was a worker at Our Lady of Victory Bingo. In retirement, Harold worked as a crossing guard on the corner of Broad and Catherine Streets. Harold’s love for the Miami Dolphins was only surpassed by listening to his granddaughter Taylor LaValley’s music.
He married the former Nancy Dandrow on June 5, 2019.
Harold was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Naomi and a sister Sheila Gonyea.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Girard of Plattsburgh, his children: Pamela Newell and her husband Ronald, Denise Brown, Elisa LaValley, his grandchildren: Kelly Newell, Darrell Newell, Cory Brown, Lisa Garrand and her husband Ben and Taylor LaValley and her significant other Troy Trombley, his siblings: Bernard Gonyo and his wife Bonnie, Elrick “Rick” Gonyo and his husband Frank, Albert Gonyo, Wanda Gonyo-Wuerzinger and her husband Tony, three great grandchildren: Jermaine Brown, Peyton and Layla Garrand, his stepchildren: Kyle Mayette and his wife Sue, Kami Savastano and her significant other Tim Barnewell, Kara Ott and her significant other Eric Beattie and Kane Mayette, nine step grandchildren: Healey Mayette, Rowan Mayette, Riley and Brodey Savastano, Akaia and Gabriel Mayette, Allie and Ethan Ott, Frejya Mayette, several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church.
Entombment will follow at Whispering Maples Mausoleum on the Tom Miller Road.
Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
