Herbert L. Primo, 86, of Banker Road, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018 at the UVM Health Network-CVPH with family by his side. He was born in Elmira, NY on February 1, 1932, the son of the late William and Marjorie (Metcalf) Primeau. Herb had an early calling to serve his country and joined the Air Force at the age of 17 where he acquired his education. He began as a flight engineer and attained the rank of Tech Sergeant. He ended his career in the field of scheduling and planning after serving in the Korean War. He retired after 21 years. As a result of his military service, on August 21, 1953, Herb was presented the Award of Air Medal by the U.S.A.F. for exceptional airmanship and by distinguishing himself during aerial flights which lasted from June 30 to July 25, 1953. This award resulted from his numerous flights into North Korea while flying a B-26. This operation against enemy installations, troop concentrations, transportation facilities and supplies were flown at maximum ranges of the aircraft and under marginal weather conditions. Enemy detection and ground fire from all types of automatic weapons were frequently encountered and always expected. These missions resulted in seriously curtailing the war potential. Herb's skill, courage and devotion to duty brought great credit upon himself and the Air Force. Most recently, Herb was the Senior Counter Man at R. E. Michel's for 18 years . Herb's hobbies included hunting, building model cars, planes and trains. He was particularly fond of museums where he could view all of them and the older, the better. Another favorite pastime for Herb was to let the kids apply make-up, lotion and hair curlers to occupy them while his loving wife Linda was styling someone's hair. Herb was the first in line to gather up the kids and take them to the park for playtime. He was familiar with all the local parks and whether he was asked to push the swing, collect someone off of the slide, go around in the Merry Go Round or supervise the teeter-totter, Herb was on duty. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda (Rock) Primo, his sons and their spouses; William Primo, Spencer and Theresa Primo, Brian and Debbie Primo, Luis, his daughters and their spouses; Mary and Kelly Smart, Leslie and Tom Letourneau, Cheyenne , Kendra, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Spencer Primo. Services will be held privately for the family.
