Joan Roy Gillman

September 19, 1935 — August 20, 2025

Plattsburgh

Joan Roy Gillman, 89, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, while under the loving care of her sons, David, Paul and daughter-in-law, Julia. The family was fortunate to have the services of Hospice of the North Country during this difficult time.

Born on September 19, 1935, in Whitestone, Long Island, Joan was the daughter of the late William "Benny" Roy and Mary Roy. She spent her early years in Lake Placid before relocating to Keene Valley, where her parents owned and operated the Spread Eagle Inn. While attending school, she met Charles Gillman, the love of her life. They were married on February 11, 1955, and were blessed with two sons, David A. Gillman and Paul N. Gillman.

As a proud military spouse, Joan embraced a life of adventure. She lived in various places during her husband's active duty, including Georgia, Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Germany. Her proudest moments were serving as a military spouse, hosting coffee gatherings for other wives, and attending social events with her husband. After Charles’s service, Joan worked at Uihlein Mercy Center for about five years.

Joan was an avid bowler throughout her adult life, participating in numerous teams and traveling to tournaments. She continued to bowl well into her 80s. In the last few months of her life, she was disappointed that she could no longer stream her beloved Yankee games. She became a devout follower of the Catholic Faith Network when she was no longer able to attend services in person.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary, her brother, Larry, and her husband, Charles. She is survived by her sons, David A. Gillman (Christina), and their children, Justin, Jordan, Alicia, and Kelli. She is also survived by her son, Paul N. Gillman (Julia), and their blended family, which includes Brittany, Kristi, Kasey, Hillary, and Ethan. She leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of her life. Joan cherished attending family functions, where her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her laughter, joy, and plenty of hugs and kisses.

A beautiful soul, Joan was known for her unconditional love and acceptance of everyone. She valued her independence and lived on her own until early 2025, when she moved for a short time to 260 Lake Street. There, she was surrounded by caring residents and staff who quickly fell in love with her infectious smile and genuine concern for others. Joan will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of being a part of her life.

Donations to Hospice of the North Country in memory of Joan are greatly appreciated.

Rest peacefully, Joan.
