Dr. John R. Mazur

Dr. John R. Mazur passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, after living with Parkinson's disease and dementia.

John was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on July 2, 1939, to Irma and John Mazur and raised in Broomall, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Marple Newtown High School, where he developed a lifelong love for playing the clarinet and saxophone, performing with the Arthur Murray Dance Band in 1957 and continuing to play throughout his life.

John earned a degree in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1961 and graduated from Hahnemann Medical College (later known as Drexel University College of Medicine) in 1965. He completed his OB/GYN residency at Philadelphia General Hospital, where in 1967 he met the love of his life and future wife, an operating room nurse named Joy.

John and Joy married on July 22, 1969, and moved to Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota, where John completed his reserve military service. After their twins were born, the young family headed east to Plattsburgh, New York, where John joined the OB/GYN practice of MacDowell, Davis, and Murphy in 1972.

Over his career, Dr. Mazur delivered generations of babies across the region before retiring in 1999. He would often joke that during the 70s and 80s, he had likely delivered about one-quarter of all the babies born in Clinton County.

A teacher at heart, John was dedicated to guiding UVM medical residents and sharing his knowledge with others. He was a discerning man who prized excellence, tinkering exhaustively to understand how things worked and how to fix them. As an avid outdoor enthusiast, John learned to hunt, canoe, hike, and ski in his younger years. He loved living on Lake Champlain and could often be seen on "The Oh Bee" cruising around Valcour.

As John aged, his interests turned toward cars, Formula One racing, and traveling with a collection of fellow adventurers known as "The Docents." Wherever John and Joy went, they made lifelong friends.

As John's Parkinson's disease progressed and dementia set in, his world became smaller, but he still deeply enjoyed the company of family, especially his grandchildren. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Joy; daughter Kim and her partner Christopher Buerkett; daughter Jackie and her husband Dan Curilla; grandsons Bode and Lucas Curilla; son Chris and his wife Carrie Mazur; granddaughters Kiersten and Katie Mazur; his sister Sue Connor and her husband Jim Connor; and their children and families.

Services will be held at Brown Funeral Home on August 22, 2026 with a viewing from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and funeral services from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
