John D. Russell, Jr.

John D. Russell Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on May 9, 2025. John grew up in Westchester County, and went on to live a life full of passion, resilience, and deep connection to the people and places he loved.

While attending Plattsburgh State University, John met his wife, Judy, beginning a partnership that spanned 61 years. Together they built a life rooted in love, adventure, and mutual support. John had an enduring love for the outdoors—he was an avid fisherman and hunter, a long-distance cyclist, and a motorcycle enthusiast who found freedom on the open road. Later in life, he developed a deep connection with horses, discovering peace in their companionship and a camaraderie among fellow equestrians. In quieter moments, John could often be found lost in a good book or listening to music, both of which brought him comfort and joy throughout his life.

A proud member of the Masonic Lodge, John was also a dedicated volunteer firefighter with the Beekmantown Fire Department. His service reflected his deep commitment to protecting and supporting his community. John was a well-known and well-loved figure—someone people turned to for advice, humor, or a helping hand. He mentored many, led by quiet example, and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Russell; his sister, Irene Russell; his daughter, Amanda Avila; and his grandson, Jackson Abbood. John will be remembered for his strength, resilience, and the generous heart he shared with so many.
