John W Sorrell

Morrisonville John W. Sorrell, 80, of Route 22B, Morrisonville, NY, passed away on Friday March 24, 2017 at UVHN:CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Plattsburgh on January 15, 1937 the son of Joseph and Bertha (Pendergast) Sorrell. John grew up in Plattsburgh where he attended St. Peter's Elementary School and went on to graduate from Mount Assumption Institute in 1955. After graduating, he worked at Imperial Wallcovering in Plattsburgh before joining the United States Army where he served as a Military Police Officer until being honorably discharged in 1962. He married the love of his life Carole Engleman, on December 20, 1962 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and moved back to Plattsburgh shortly after. Upon returning to the North Country John became a Corrections Officer at Clinton Correctional. He graduated from Plattsburgh State University with a master degree in education and later a master degree from SUNY Albany in Audio Visual Communications. John taught at several area schools before becoming the Assistant Audio Visual Director for North Syracuse School District. He returned to Plattsburgh where he was a Grievance Coordinator and later became an educator at Clinton Correctional retiring in 2001. After retiring John worked at BOCES as a Job Coach. He valued the importance of education, was the first in his family to graduate from college and saw all four of his children earn college degrees. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts, the Knights of Columbus Council 6067 in Morrisonville, and a parishioner at St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville and later St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and was an avid outdoorsman. John was predeceased by his parents and two brothers; Raymond and Kenneth Sorrell. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Carole Sorrell, four children; Erin "Katie" Deutsch and her husband Christopher of Spencer, NY, Matthew Sorrell and his wife Kimberlee (Stevens) of Covington, GA, Alison Sorrell and her partner Allisha Enck of Brighton, CO and Bridget Sangiorgi and her husband Francesco of Longmont, CO, three grandchildren; Kailyn Sorrell, Shane Sorrell, Luca Sangiorgi and a fourth grandchildren in the near future, a brother Howard Sorrell of Stillwater, NY, several nieces and nephews also survive him. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday March 28, 2017 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday March 29, 2017 at 1:00 pm at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh.
