Joseph A Gonyea, 72, of Peru passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at the CVPH Medical Center with loving family by his side. He was born in Plattsburgh on August 3, 1954, the son of Louis J Gonyea and Mary Duquette Gonyea.
Joseph spent many years caring for adults with disabilities in Indiana. Upon returning to the North Country he spent many years as a reliable and familiar presence at the Butcher Block.
Joseph was a gentle, faithful, and quiet man who appreciated the simple rhythms of a quiet life. He said the rosary daily and attended mass at St. Augustine’s in Peru regularly. He enjoyed his plants and listening to music.
He is survived by his brother, Louis Gonyea of Plattsburgh, and three sisters; Carol Barcomb of West Chazy, Patricia Vanvalkenburg of Keeseville, and Barbara Dubay of Plattsburgh along with 5 nephews; Jeremy and James Gonyea, Todd Barcomb, Shawn and Shane Dubay as well as 3 nieces; Niki Barcomb, Chasity Walters, and Jamie French; and many great nieces and nephews.
