Joseph Louis Levaque

Joseph Louis Levaque, of Plattsburgh, NY, and most beloved husband of Susan Levaque, departed this world on May 17, 2017, after living an amazing and fulfilling life. Louis (also formerly known as Brother Louis of Mount Assumption Institute (M.A.I.)) was born in Limonge, Ontario on December 10, 1924, and was the son of Bruno and Aimee (Guibord) Levaque. He and Susan enjoyed a genuinely happy and loving marriage for 30 years. His wife, his two brothers, Jacques and Guy Levaque, a sister, Sr. Eveline Levaque, and many nieces, nephews and cousins, survive him. Louis began his adult life as a teaching brother in the Catholic order, Brothers of Christian Instruction. With energy and enthusiasm, Louis devoted 57 years to education, beginning his career as an elementary teacher, and later moving on to teach French and physical education to both middle and high school students. Louis taught in Montreal PQ, Detroit, Michigan, Summersville, WV, 26 years at M.A.I., and lastly, for13 years at Northeast Clinton Central School (N.C.C.S), retiring in 2002. Brother Louis loved and was very active in all sports and served as Athletic Director at M.A.I. and as the head of CVAC Section VII. He also led the way in making M.A.I. the first North Country school to have a lighted sports field so games could be played at night. In addition to a long and accomplished teaching career, Louis served in the Canadian Army and taught riflery and was an instructor in the Cadet Corps. He loved hockey and as a young man played for a farm team that was run by what would become the Ottawa Senators. When still a brother, he devoted his time during summer months to work as a Waterfront Director and teaching riflery at Boyland, in Naples, Maine. Louis was an active member of the Retired Teacher's Association, Knights of Columbus, and a long-time parishioner of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He enjoyed working in stained glass, woodworking, gardening and beekeeping, reading, and spending time with family and friends. Louis strongly believed that it was the duty of everyone to devote some talent and time towards helping others. His last project before his death was knitting winter hats for children. At Louis' request, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Plattsburgh, NY, and will be announced. Monetary donation or donation of one's time may be made to a charity of choice in memory of Joseph Louis Levaque.
