Plattsburgh Mrs. Kitty Munk, 86, from Lake Forest Senior Community in Plattsburgh, recently from Clinton County Nursing Home, passed away peacefully at CVPH from complications of Alzheimer's disease on January 30, 2015. She was born in Teplice, Czechoslovakia, now Czech Republic. During World War II, she and her family were interned in Terezin (Therezienstadt) concentration camp, where she met her future husband, Vladimir. Separated during the late stages of war when he was deported to Auschwitz death camp, they reunited in Prague only to be separated again early in 1947, when Kitty had to emigrate with her parents to the United States. She returned in Fall 1949, when she was 21, and married Vladimir. After the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact Forces, Kitty and her husband, along with their two sons left for the United States and settled in Plattsburgh, where Vladimir accepted a position as Professor of Microbiology at SUNY Plattsburgh. Fluent in four languages, Kitty provided translation assistance to the U.S. Border Patrol in Champlain, N.Y.. She was an active supporter of the Red Cross, and donated hundreds of hank-knitted blankets to local nursing homes. She loved needlepoint. An avid reader, she enjoyed her book club and often engaged in a passionate discussion about the latest publication. Kitty liked cooking; she often welcomed friends and students into her home with gracious hospitality. To this day, many recall her excellent cooking and baking. Kitty was predeceased by her parents, Karel and Bertha Lowi, and her brother, Hans, who was murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz when he was eighteen years old. She leaves behind husband of 66 years, Vladimir, her two sons and their spouses; Peter (Sheila) of Toronto, Canada, and Paul (Alice) of Highland Park, Illinois, four grandchildren; Matthew, Julia, David and Henry and a great granddaughter Hannah. In accordance with Kitty's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be offered to a charity of one's choice.
