Plattsburgh Lois Ann Hyland-Brooks passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh after a long illness. Lois or Loann as she was better known was predeceased by her parents Gerald and Loretta Jones Hyland and a sister Rosemary Hyland Coons. She is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Robert O. Brooks, their children, MaryLynn and husband Frank DeGroat of Show Low, AZ, and Thomas J. and wife Dianne of Glens Falls, NY. Loann also leaves behind a brother, John and wife Ellen of Elmira, NY and a sister Geraldine and husband Rolf Wetzell, of Shelburne, VT, along with several nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Loann was born in Chateaugay, NY on November 30, 1929 and graduated from high school there before studying to be a registered nurse at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY where she graduated in 1951 with a BS degree along with the RN. She later completed her Masters' Degree and certification as a school nurse teacher at SUNY Plattsburgh with employment following at the Saranac Central School system for eighteen years, as well as membership in NYSTA. Loann also worked in the Operating Room at CVPH and for Dr. Edward Seagle, Optometrist in Plattsburgh. Besides her medical profession, Loann and Bob enjoyed boating and camping during summers at their cottage on Chateaugay Lake, traveling with their RV throughout the Northeast, and wintering in Florida upon retirement. They also spent several years compiling documents and records to have the Church of St Dismas, the Good Thief, at Dannemora State Prison placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1991. Calling hours will be held on Sunday January 31, 2016 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday February 1, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Church in Plattsburgh where she was a long time communicant. Burial will be in the spring in the family plot at St. Augustine's Church in Peru. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. John's Church.
