Obituary for Mary G. (Darling) Penfield
Plattsburgh: Mrs. Mary Gay (Darling) Penfield, 88, of Plattsburgh, New York passed away Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the Meadowbrook Nursing Center. She was born in Hartford, Connecticut on January 31, 1938, the daughter of Richard H. and E. Blanche (Benson) Darling of Wingdale, NY.
A graduate of Dover Plains High School, she left for College at SUNY Plattsburgh where she met the love of her life George R, Penfield who she married on June 28th, 1958. Soon after graduating in 1959 with her Teaching degree, she gave birth to her first of four sons, all of which were born in a 5-year period. She later returned to college to obtain a Masters degree in Human Services. She was a parishioner of St. John’s Church and for many years where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, and a member of the Altar Rosery Society and Bereavement Committee. Mary will be most remembered for her passion for helping and supporting others across three counties for many years as a Services Coordinator for the Advocacy Resource Center and her passion for dancing.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, her husband George R. Penfield, her brother Richard (Dickie) Darling, and her son George Richard Penfield.
She is survived by her three sons, Robert (Mike) Penfield and his wife Theresa A (Fish) Penfield, Thomas G. Penfield from Plattsburgh and John F. Penfield and his partner Hue Trinh from Longs, SC, her brother Gordon Darling and wife Connie, her sister Wendy McCarthy and husband Kevin, three grandchildren and four great grandchild, Chesney E. A. (Penfield) Weeden and her husband Nathan B. Weeden of West Chazy, NY, and their two children Azalyn G. and Samuel B. Weeden, Jerred M. Penfield and his wife Sarah J. (Hardy) Penfield and their sons Brantley W. and Asher M. Penfield of Tucson, AZ and Ian T. Penfield of Cape Cod, MA
Calling hours will be held on Thursday September 17, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday September 18, 2026 at 10:00 am at St. John’s Church in Plattsburgh. Interment will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery
