Myron A Matzkin

Myron “Mike” Matzkin, 98, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Wednesday March 2, 2022 at Elizabethtown Hospital. He was born in New York City on February 25, 1924, the son of David and Rebekah (Lieberman) Matzkin.
He attended NYU on a scholarship as a member of the fencing team. He became a NCAA National Champion Fencer and later met his wife, Bea, while judging a fencing competition.
Mike served in the U.S. Army during WW II and was stationed in Italy and Africa.
Mike began his career as a sports writer on small town newspapers. He was an editor of Modern Photography magazine, and then started his own public relations firm with Nikon Cameras as his main client. Eventually he went to work at Canon USA as National Director of Public Relations. During that time, he facilitated many of Canon’s sport sponsorships and attended the Indianapolis 500, the Super Bowl, the US Tennis Championships, and both winter and summer Olympics throughout the world. He became adept at producing videos for new products. Mike also wrote many freelance articles and several books on photography.
While photography remained his passion, Mike had many interests throughout his life. He was an avid scuba diver in the early days, eventually designing one of the first underwater housings for his camera. He loved to race sports cars until his two children were born and his wife sold his helmet! He enjoyed reading, skiing, sailing, bicycling, and traveling. At the age of 50, Mike began distance running, eventually completing several NY City Marathons. Mike had a lifelong love of dogs.

He is survived by two children, Sarah Brown and her husband Rodney of Vero Beach, FL, and Johnathon Matzkin of New York City. He adored his two granddaughters; Rebecca Brown of Columbia, Maryland and Sonja Brown of Plattsburgh, NY It was to be closer to their granddaughters that led Bea and Mike to relocate from Westchester County to the North Country. Several nieces and nephews also survive him. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Bea, as well as his sister and parents.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 7, 2022 at Temple Beth Israel in Plattsburgh, NY. Services will be live streamed starting at 10:50am and can be found on the Brown Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery in Plattsburgh. We request that only vaccinated individuals attend the funeral service. A Shiva service will be held via Zoom at 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the animal rescue or shelter of your choice.
