Patricia J. Roach Whalen Maley, 88, of Plattsburgh, NY and Orange City, Fl was welcomed by God with open arms at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial on Friday, March 6, 2015. She was born October 9, 1926 the eldest of five daughters to the late Honorable Emmett and Lillian Clark Roach in Norfolk, N.Y. She moved to Plattsburgh, NY in October 1927 where she grew up on Sailly Avenue in front of her Dad's milk processing plant, Plattsburgh Dairy. She learned to drive standard transmission so she could drive the milk trucks. She had a milk tester's license until the dairy closed in 1972. She attended St. John's Academy where she was active in Student Government and a Cheerleader, graduating in 1944. She attended Skidmore College. On August 11, 1947 she married her high school sweetheart, Paul E. Whalen and lived in Rome, NY. The family returned to Plattsburgh in 1953 where they opened The Frosty Dairy Bar, home of the Pig's Dinner, where a customer was given a metal if they finished their famous banana split! She was active in The Junior League of Champlain Valley Hospital, past President of Mother's Club, a Brownie leader at Bailey Avenue School and Girl Scout Leader. She graduated from Plattsburgh State University in 1961 with a degree in Home Economics presented to her by her Dad, Chairman of the Board of the University. She began her teaching career at Beekmantown Central School in the Home Economics Department and Cafeteria Supervisor. She was a team leader in the State Department of Education to develop Home and Career Skills for Junior High students. She was a member of the NYS Home Economics Teachers Assn 1961-1987, serving as Secretary 1983-86. Also a member of American Home Economics Assn. She was the advisor for FHA at Beekmantown during her teaching career. In 1990 she served on the City of Plattsburgh Charter Revision Commission. Clinton County Co-Op Extension Board 1984-1988. Plattsburgh City School District School Board 1964-1968. She was a member of St. John's Parrish her entire life, a member of the Parrish Council mid 1980's, served as President. She was a caller at St John's Bingo 1974- 1986. She was a Eucharist Minister, Altar Rosary Society at St John's and St Ann's, Debary, Florida. She was a member of Retired Home Economics Teachers. Enjoyed Monday Club Bridge serving as President 1992-96. She was a Kent DeLord House docent 1986-1996 serving on the BOD and Treasurer. She was also a docent at the Art Gallery at Plattsburgh State. She enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Bluff Point Ladies Golf Assn and The Barrack's Ladies Golf League. On June 14, 1997 she married Richard Maley at St John's Church, Plattsburgh, NY. They RV'd in the Western States 1997-2000 Being a Snow Bird she was a member of Country Village Bocce League, served as Treasurer for many years. Magnolia Bowling League, President 2005-07. Sunburst Country Red Hat Club, Monastery 9'ers Ladies Golf League. Patricia is survived by her husband Richard, Maureen (John) Hall, Penfield, NY, Loueen Whalen, Clifton Park, NY, Patricia (Irvin) Reid, Plattsburgh, NY, Margaret ( Edward) Hynes, Fairport, NY, David P. Whalen, Rochester, NY. Grandchildren, John Hall, Chicago, Il., Robert (Betsy) Hall, Columbus, OH. Christopher (Piper) Hall, Washington, DC. David Murello, Clifton Park, NY, Capt. Steven Murello, USMC, Camp Lejune, NC. Andrew (Eileen) Reid, Metuchen, NJ, Philip Reid, Plattsburgh, NY, Joseph Reid, Laconia, NH, Erin (Patrick) Phalen, Victor, NY, Meghan Hynes (Jason Hoyt, fiancé), Arkport, NY. 4 Great Grandchildren, Gray, Penn, Buckley and Jaxon. Pat was predeceased by her husband Paul, son Michael and 3 Great Grandchildren, Hadley, Adelaide and Milo Hall and brother-in-law Arnold Amell. Survived by her sisters Barbara (Joe) Waters Oneonta, NY, Joan Amell, Scotia, NY, Jean (Douglas) McMillan, Cincinnati, OH, Doreen(James) Ryan, Littleton, Co. Sister-in-laws Eileen Brewer, St Augustine, FL., Dorothy Whalen, Glens Falls, NY., Step-children, step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ever the Home Economics teacher, Pat collected over 100 thimbles during her travels to Ireland, England, Greece and the west coast. Pat's favorite place was at the Roach camp on the shores of Lake Champlain where she spent many happy hours with her family and sisters, boating, water skiing, sun bathing on the sandy beach or in the winter, ice skating and x- country skiing on the frozen lake. The family requests tokens of sympathy be made to St John's Church "Special Projects" or a charity of your choice in Pat's name. Calling hours will be Friday March, 13, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. Plattsburgh, New York 12901. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Church. Interment will be at a later date at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
