Raymond Devens

Mr. Raymond Devens, 83, of Joe Wood Road in Altona, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016 at the UVM Health Network-CVPH in Plattsburgh with family by his side. He was born in Petrolia, N.Y. on November 18, 1932, the son of the late Nicholas and Ruth (Trowbridge) Devens. Raymond served in the U.S. Army for 28 years where he had tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam . He retired in 1978 from Letter Kenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, Pa. as a Post Sergeant Major. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Post 1619. He was a member of Holy Angels Church where he also was a member of Holy Angels Church Contemporary Band. He enjoyed playing his mandolin, reading, and using his computer. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Philanda (Wood) Devens, 2 sons and daughters in law; John and Wendy Devens of Sanford, Fl., Ray Anthony and Karen Devens of Hawaii, 6 daughters and five sons in law; Diane and Guy McCormick of Englewood, Fl., Mona Grubbs of Fort Myers, Fl., Elizabeth and Kevin Fraser of Gresham, Or., Barbara and Randy Dunlap of Orrstown, Pa., Julie and Timothy Aebie of Franklin, Tn., Janet and Michael Godfrey of Marysville, Tn., 15 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A son, Nicholas Devens passed away in 1956. Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 8, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home, 3123 Miner Farm Road in Altona. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Holy Angels Church in Altona. Interment with military honors will tentatively be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at a time to be announced in the parish cemetery.
