Raymond G. Newell

Former Town of Schuyler Falls Supervisor Passes Away
Raymond G. (Ray) Newell of Rabideau Street, Cadyville, New York and Lakeland, Florida, passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2026, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, NY.

Ray was born in Plattsburgh on December 31, 1935, the son of Henry C. and Emma (Guyette) Newell. After completing high school, he entered the United States Marine Corps on January 4, 1955.

Mr. Newell received his basic training at Parris Island Marine Base, after which he was assigned to the Naval Air Training Center in Jacksonville, Florida, for advanced training.

On August 29, 1955, Ray married Beverly I. Venne of Morrisonville, N.Y., at St. James Minor Church, with the Rev. Bernard Kellogg officiating. Ray and Bev then moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina, where Ray was assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at New River, North Carolina. In 1957, he was assigned to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Subiny in the Republic of Turkey.

Ray received his Honorable Discharge in December 1958, and he and his family returned to Morrisonville, NY, to settle. He then went to work at the Vanity Fair (Georgia-Pacific) Paper Mill in Plattsburgh, where he remained until 1980.

Ray was elected Councilman in November 1967, a post he held until 1977, when he was elected Town Supervisor. From 1980 to 1997, he served as Facility Supervisor at Ausable Point State Campground and Day Use Area. In November 1997, he was again elected Town Supervisor, serving two years before retiring in December 1999.

Ray was active for many years in county, town, and civic organizations, including the Boy Scouts, 4-H, JCEO, and the Senior Citizens Council of Clinton County. He served more than 39 years on the Clinton County Democratic Committee, more than 20 years as Town Democratic Chairman, and was a member of the St. James Church Council.

Ray is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, of Cadyville; his three children, Corky (Rebecca) Newell, Karla (Jeff) Brewer, and Michael R. Newell, all of Morrisonville; four grandchildren, Melissa Newell and her husband, Pete Lopane, of Laval, Canada, Jennifer (Tom) Haley, Austin (Katherine) Newell, and Taylor (Ryan) Manion; and three great-grandchildren, Hayden Haley, Hallie Haley, Emmett Newell; two step-great-grandchildren, Ian, and Islah.
He was predeceased by his parents; his two sisters, Marcella Lashway (1981) and Joyce Russell (1988); and his four brothers, Kenneth Newell (1969), Peter E. Newell (1992), Robert H. Newell (1986), and John A. Newell (1995).

At Mr. Newell's request, no calling hours will be held. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville, New York. Interment will follow at St. James Cemetery in Cadyville, New York.
