Richard "Dick" Johnson, 77, of Beekman Street Plattsburgh passed away on Saturday January 24, 2026 at the UVM-CVPH Health Network. With his wife by his side, he fought a long battle with Lewy-Body dementia and Parkinson's disease. He was born in Plattsburgh on August 27, 1948, the son of the late Daisy and Harmon Johnson. Dick graduated from Plattsburgh High School and SUNY Canton, and served in the Army Reserves. He owned and operated, along with his brother Dan, Johnson's Auto Glass & Trim for over 50 years. Dick excelled at everything he did, whether it be skiing, motocross, broomball (Johnson's), softball (Psychos), or golf.
His true passion however, was that of flight. He acquired his private pilot's license and took to the skies. He would go on to build experimental aircraft and powered parachutes in his hangar on Cumberland Head. He was always offering a ride to those who dared. "Remember, risks are not taken to escape life, but rather to stop life from escaping us." -RJ.
Dick was predeceased by his parents, his brother Dan, and his wife Debra, and 2 nephews Scott and Brenton Johnson. Dick is survived by his best friend and wife Sally, his nephew Kristopher Johnson and his wife Donna of Charlotte, NC, his in-laws Niki Lawliss and her husband Russell of Plattsburgh, NY, Connie Montinarello of Rochester, NY, Jeff LaChapelle and his wife Melissa of Pensacola, FL, and Sue Carpenter of Plattsburgh, NY. Several extended family members also survive him, along with his life-long friend Tom Gale and his wife Debi.
A celebration of life and story telling will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026 at 3:00 PM at Meron's Restaurant. Donations may be made to the Northeast Chapter of the Alzheimer's Disease (Caregiver's Support Initiative.), or the Interfaith Food Shelf.
Fly high, my love.
