Plattsburgh Mr. Salvatore "Sal" Arena, 86, of Hillcrest Avenue, Plattsburgh, New York passed away, Monday, April 12, 2010 at the CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island on December 4, 1923 the son of Domenic and Guissepina (Selipini) Arena. Sal left school to join the Army serving during WWII at Rome-Arno, Tunisia, Naples, North Apennines and PO Valley. He received the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Sal was wounded at Mt. Pero during the PO Valley Campaign, Italy. He came to Plattsburgh in 1958 and opened Acme Concrete Forms and poured the concrete foundation at Plattsburgh Lanes. Sal introduced poured concrete foundations to the area and constructed all the missile silos. In 1961 he opened Domenic's Restaurant with his wife Jane which they operated for 45 years. In the 1970's, he was a wrestling promoter. Sal traveled extensively in the U. S. and Italy attending many food shows where he would learn recipes and use at his restaurant. After 65 years, Sal obtained his high school diploma in 2006. Sal was a member and Past President of the Plattsburgh Lion's Club and St. Peter's Church. He was predeceased by his parents Domenic and Guissepina Arena, a stepdaughter Carleen Belcher, three brothers; Steve, Joseph and Frank Arena. Sal is survived by his wife of 49 years Jane (Weatherwax) Arena of Plattsburgh, a son Domenic Arena of Providence, RI, a stepson Kevin "Skip O'Hara and his wife Debbie of Plattsburgh, a sister Grace Masse of Syracuse, 5 grandchildren; Jason, Christine, Marissa, Nikki and Nathan, 6 great grandchildren; Noah, Lodan, Sydney, Sophie, Emma and Halle, several nieces and nephews and his canine companion Dunito. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 15, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 16, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Church. Entombment will follow at Whispering Maples Mausoleum.
