Plattsburgh

Wayne Allen Champine, 80, most recently of Plattsburgh, New York, passed away peacefully with his daughters and his beloved dog, Jack, by his side on May 15, 2026.

Wayne was born in Proctor, Vermont, on October 10, 1945, to Olive Pecor and Vernon Champine. He attended school in Barre, Vermont, and at just 17 years old enlisted in the Army. He served for three years in Germany. After returning home, Wayne settled in Barre, where he married Colleen Donahue and welcomed his two daughters, Carisa Ann and Kara Lyn. He worked as an electrician for 32 years with Bates & Murray, EF Wall, and Lamberton Electric before retiring to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he spent 18 years enjoying the sunshine, warm weather, and beautiful beaches he came to love so much. He then moved back to Barre and later to Plattsburgh, New York.

Wayne found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time at his hunting camp, and hunting and fishing were among his favorite pastimes. He also taught himself how to restore old cars, and many evenings and weekends were happily spent in his garage bringing them back to life or proudly showing them at car shows. More than anything, Wayne loved warm weather, rides in his convertible with oldies playing on the radio and relaxing with a good cigar.

Wayne will be remembered for his positive outlook on life, his friendly nature, and his wonderful sense of humor. He leaves behind many warm memories that his family and friends will cherish always.

Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Vernon Champine and Olive Curtis; his sister, Margaret Christie; his younger brother, David DeLong; and his half-sister, Joyce Champine. He is survived by his two daughters and their spouses, Carisa and Shawn Warren, with whom he resided in Plattsburgh, New York, and Kara and Brett Jacobson of Bellingham, Massachusetts. He also leaves behind his five beloved grandchildren, Tyler Warren, Olivia Warren, Sophie Jacobson, Gavin Jacobson, and Jace Jacobson. In addition, he is survived by his half-siblings, Cheryl Bean, Gary Champine, Verna Pratt, Linda O’Bara, Shelly Gresham, and Sandy Hale.

Internment will take place at 12pm at Wilson Cemetery in Barre Town on June 6, 2026, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Barre Legion from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of the North Country, 358 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh, NY 12901 or to the VA General Post Fund.
