William D. Brewer

June 16, 1947 — April 10, 2026

West Chazy, NY

William D. Brewer, 78, of West Chazy, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, at CVPH Medical Center. He was born June 16, 1947, in Big Spring, TX, the son of William T. Brewer and Lillian Brewer.

Dave, as he is known to family and friends, spent the first 19 years of his life in Big Spring. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1965, where he participated in baseball, football, and track and field. After spending a year at Howard Community College, Dave enlisted in the United States Air Force, beginning his active duty in August 1966. In 1968 Dave was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Dave’s military service took him many places, but the final stop in his military service was Plattsburgh Air Force Base where he ended his active duty assignment in July 1970. While Plattsburgh marked the end of Dave’s time in the armed services, it served as both the starting point and home for the rest of his life.

While stationed at Plattsburgh Dave met the love of his life, Sharon Yelle of Ellenburg Center. Dave and Sharon were married on November 14, 1970 at St. Edmund’s Church in Ellenburg Center, and enjoyed 55 years of marriage together. Dave and Sharon had two sons, Mark in 1971 and John in 1977. They had many great adventures as a family. Dave was a devoted family man and was always there for his wife and two boys.

Dave began his post-military career working for Montgomery Ward, starting out in their Margaret Street warehouse. Dave soon moved into management, first in the Lawn and Garden department before eventually becoming the manager of the Parts and Service department. After Montgomery Ward closed Dave went into business for himself, opening and operating One Stop Repair in Plattsburgh for many years. Dave could fix anything and everything. After leaving One Stop, Dave continued fixing things for long-time clients and also served as a bus driver for First Transit. He particularly enjoyed his time driving school children. Dave was a very hard worker and always kept himself busy.

Dave loved to spend time outdoors. He was an avid fisherman. He loved going after the brook trout of upstate New York almost as much as he did the salmon of Alaska. Dave was a skilled carpenter and woodworker who built many cherished things for his sons and eventually grandchildren over the years. Dave was a big sports fan who followed many different sports, but his passion in his later years was the New York Knicks. All of the things Dave loved to do involved his family. He was thrilled when he first became a grandpa, and “Papa” always loved to see his grandchildren.

Dave is survived by his wife Sharon, sons Mark, with his wife Tammy, and John, grandchildren Megan, Alison, Jack, Ryleigh, David, and Gabriel, and his siblings Shelia, Thomas, and Timmy. He is predeceased by his parents, William and Lillian, and daughter-in-law Stephanie.

Visitation will take place on Friday, June 1, 2026, from 9:30am to 11:00am at Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh, with a prayer service. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Chazy.
