Our History
1892–1931: A Tradition of Service and Resilience
Brown Funeral Home was founded by Eugene J. Brown in 1892 at its original location on City Hall Place. After a fire, the funeral home relocated to Bridge Street, only to move again around 1910 following a second fire. Mr. Brown then built the large, modern facility at 29 Broad Street that still serves families today—making Brown Funeral Home the oldest continually operated business in Clinton County.
Eugene Brown began his funeral service career after working as a U.S. Customs Agent on the train between Plattsburgh and Montreal. He completed embalming studies in Canada before returning home to open Eugene Brown and Son Funeral Home. He was the only embalmer north of Albany. His sons, Eugene Jr. and Leo, later joined the business, and Harold Webb—who went on to serve as City Councilman and Mayor—joined in 1931.
1964–2005: Leadership Transitions and Community Growth
In 1964, long-time employees Norman F. Jabaut and Nicholas A. Pope purchased the business. Both men built distinguished careers at Brown Funeral Home, eventually becoming licensed funeral directors and presidents of the firm. Norman’s son, Jeffrey Jabaut, joined in 1977, followed by Warren J. Bennett in 1980—who worked his way from employee to eventual owner.
2006–2008: Enhancing Service and Expanding Offerings
A major renovation in 2006 expanded the Broad Street facility with larger chapels, improved privacy for families, handicap accessibility, and a modern arrangement center. In 2008, the Bennett family launched Adirondack Memorials and Granite Works, allowing us to offer monuments, memorials, and—later—burial and cremation vaults directly to families.
2013–Present: Expanding Care for All Families
In 2013, Mountain View Crematory opened nearby, allowing Brown Funeral Home to become the only true full-service funeral home in the North Country, offering seamless funeral and cremation services with continuity throughout the entire process. All our cremation services take place in this dedicated facility within our network, ensuring your loved one remains under our professional supervision every step of the way. In 2019, Adirondack Pet Cremation Service was added, extending compassionate care to the fur-family members who mean so much to the people we serve.
Today, Brown Funeral Home continues to honor its heritage by serving families with compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment.
